"Before Berry Gordy started Motown—before Russell Simmons and Suge Knight were even born—
Don Robey epitomized what it meant to be a Black music mogul."
- Preston Lauterbach, Author
ABOUT:
Don Robey was America’s FIRST Black record mogul, out of Houston, TX, in the 1940s/50s/60s segregated South. He led one of the most successful Black-owned businesses of the time, and has been recognized by the Blues Hall of Fame and Texas Historical Commission as a pioneer of the music industry. Robey owned five record labels and had an extensive roster - including Big Mama Thornton and her rendition of “Hound Dog” (notably covered by Elvis Presley). He was the mastermind behind 8 No. 1 HITS, 46 TOP 10 HITS, and 80 TOP 40 HITS, as well as 1,400+ additional works. His catalog still impacts many people to this day by averaging over 330 million global streams annually.
